Notes

To start at our sessions you will need skates, they can either use your own or hire these from the Arena. To start with we teach the young person to skate.

We concentrate on getting the correct body posture to get maximum balance in order to perform the required moves. Generally you will be too upright, legs straight and feet close together. This is not good for balance. We will play games and have drills to encourage you to bend your knees and get your feet wider apart. This will provide a more stable base for you to skate.

To start with you may find it a bit of a strain on your back, after a while you will become use to it. We try to vary the activities to keep you interested and to take your minds off the fact they are on roller skates. We try to install confidence and sense of achievement in all our coaching.

We also use minimum contact and support, so you do it on your own. This is also one of the reasons we do not always use hockey sticks at this stage. Experience has shown us that young people use the stick to help them balance and this develops bad habits and skating techniques that are difficult to break. Another reason for not using a stick with younger people is that they do not have the strength in their wrist and arms to use it correctly.

The club provides the balls and has  sticks for people to use until they get their own one.

We do insist that once a player starts using a stick and ball at whatever age, they wear a protective box for their own safety. Gloves, shin guards and knee pads are also required, the club has these available. Gum shields can also be use by individual choice.

At some point the player will want their own skates, wheels and stick, there are many options available, please ask the coaches for advice when purchasing any equipment, we also may be able to save you some money.
